There are different severity of damaged hair, from split ends to cracked and damaged cuticles when the damage is prolonged and permanent. Cuticles are the outer protective layer of our hair. When the cuticle is damaged, the hair is left exposed to even more damage.
What causes it?
Heat damage is one of the common cause. It could be from the environment but mainly from the heat treatments and styling procedures one might use such as hair relaxer and straightening.
These procedures uses heat mainly that can cause your hair to dry out and compromise the health of your hair causing the hair to become dry, rigid and brittle.
Chemical damage is also another common factor especially from the chemicals found in products used such as chemical hair dye.
In the case of some permanent hair dyes, higher levels of hydrogen peroxide and ammonia can be found. Ammonia breaks the outer cuticle around the hair shaft and hydrogen peroxide works by oxidizing and bleaching out the natural colour.
