Vitamin D & Healthy Hair
Our hair needs various nutrients and minerals to stay healthy. Vitamin D is a fat-soluble nutrient that is vital for the proper function of our hair and skin, supporting hair growth and regrowth. Some research has shown that a vitamin D deficiency can lead to hair loss amongst other problems. This is because vitamin D plays a role in the creation of new hair follicles and helps to stimulate hair follicles to grow.
Another benefit of Vitamin D is that it also aids in the absorption of calcium, which in turn helps with the absorption of iron; all of which are essential for healthy hair.
Hair loss may be a sign of vitamin D deficiency. Other symptoms may include constant fatigue, muscle weakness, chronic pain and changes in mood, depression or anxiety.
Sources of Vitamin D
The good news is that vitamin D is the only nutrient that our body can produce when exposed to sunlight (moderately). But more people are spending more time indoors or wearing sunblock outside. So here are some excellent dietary sources of vitamin D;
- Canned Tuna
- Cod Liver Oil
- Egg Yolks
- Fortified foods such as milk, cereals and oatmeals
Dietary sources of vitamin D should be supplemented with plenty of healthy fats. Healthy fats help the vitamin D to be readily absorbed into the body.
Good sources of healthy fat include;
- Chia Seeds
Vitamin D plays a key role in our health and well-being, including healthy hair. Having a deficiency in vitamin D makes one more likely to experience hair loss. If you would like to find out more about vitamin D deficiency or dietary changes, please do consult your doctor or dietician first. Remember everything is best in a well-balanced moderation.
Prolonged exposure to the sun could also cause sun damage to your hair, leaving it dry and damaged.
